The photographs are unremarkable, and that is rather the point of them: a car park in the last of the light, the tailgate of an estate car standing open, carrier bags of coats packed up to the roof lining.
In March 2022, two weeks after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, the Greek-Scythian Society joined the congregation of the English church of St Mary's to fill several vehicles with clothing and food for people displaced by the war. The loading ran over several days.
What went east was ordinary — blankets, winter coats, tinned food, bottled water — gathered and packed by people who in most cases had met that week for the first time. The Society is a research and living-history organisation, and this was not research. It is recorded here because it happened, and because the people in these photographs gave up their weekend to do it.
